New playground to bring more fun at Ware's Stanley M. Koziol

Date: 2/8/2023

WARE – Students at Stanley M. Koziol (SMK) have much to look forward to as they await the arrival of a new playground.

During the Ware School Committee meeting on Feb. 1, SMK Principal Pamela Iwasinski provided an update on the process in which the school decided on using Ultiplay Parks and Playgrounds out of Blackstone. “They tended to fit our budget, the style of play we were looking to put in, they also [are] able to install it this year,” Iwasinski said.

She went on to share the preschool and K-3 playground schematics. Additional rubber will be added on the ground to make it safer for the youngest kids.

Regarding the timeline of installation, Iwasinski said if they submit the final order within the next two weeks (of the meeting), shipping will arrive in early June 2023. She noted that it will not ship until 90 percent of the necessary items are included, however, there may be a few items that the company brings with it if they are not ready.

“Our goal is to be done by July, hopefully before the summer program starts. But the shipping should be done in early June,” added Iwasinski.

The total cost of the new playground is $234,730.10. She noted that if the school uses its own crew to demolish the existing playground, it will save around $8,000. Iwasinski spoke with Joseph Vadnais from facilities who believes he can easily take down the “T Swing,” the main playground area and fitness challenge area. Whether the town or school can help with the site prep or disposal of, Iwasinski said it could potentially save up to $13,000 by doing that.

The only existing structures that will remain are the two large swing sets.
