Rich steps down as Ware Junior Senior High School principal

Date: 7/25/2023

WARE — Ware Junior Senior High School Principal Eugene Rich announced in a July 20 email to the school community his intention to resign from his position.

“During my tenure I have faced many situations that would call for difficult decisions to be rendered. Today, I share one more with you,” Rich wrote.

Rich, who was hired to succeed former Principal Edwin Ramos in 2019 after a lengthy teaching career in the school department, did not specify in the letter when his last day would be, stating he would be “assisting the district with developing and implementing a transition plan that will ultimately set our students up for a positive and successful start to their school year.” He did not respond to Reminder Publishing’s request for comment.

Superintendent Michael Lovato followed up Rich’s letter with one of his own, expressing gratitude for Rich’s service to the district.

“Throughout his time in service, Mr. Rich has demonstrated exceptional dedication to the students and family, leaving a lasting impact on their lives. His genuine care, integrity, and strong sense of responsibility have made a significant difference in fostering a positive environment for all,” Lovato said.

Lovato echoed Rich’s message that a succession plan was in the works, though he did not respond to Reminder Publishing when asked what that process might look like.

“As we prepare for the next phase of our high school journey, we want to assure you that a comprehensive transition plan is in the works,” Lovato wrote. “This plan will be shared with staff, students, parents and guardians as a top priority ensuring that everyone remains informed and involved in this period of change.”

Lovato, whose first day replacing former Superintendent Marlene DiLeo was July 1, told Reminder Publishing earlier this month that he had already met with principals to develop plans, break down data and identify goals for the upcoming school year. This echoed the message he delivered to the School Committee when laying out his preliminary plan for his first 100 days at a meeting in May.

The potential for Rich’s exit was not mentioned in either discussion.
