WARE – The Ware Board of Selectmen discussed retiree town insurance as well as a new whistle blower phone line at their meeting on May 9.
To begin the meeting, the board started by getting legal clarification on the request for retiree town insurance. This was approved at a prior meeting, though many members of the community voiced their opinions that it could set an unwanted precedent.
The town attorney stated that it would be acceptable for the board to go ahead with making this exception, but did point out that it could set a precedent. In the past, the board granted retiree town insurance to a previous superintendent.
After a discussion, the board decided to keep the exception approved and did not change their mind.
The board then discussed a newly created whistle blower line. This hotline will be where employees of the town can call and give information about unsafe work conditions, unfair treatment and more anonymously. All calls that come in would then be dealt with by the town’s Human Resources Department.
Right now, the hotline is being prioritized for town employees. The number and more information will be included on future paystubs. In the future, the hotline could expand to include all citizens of the town.
Later, the board moved to discuss warrant articles for the upcoming Town Meeting, which took place after press time on May 9.
