Ware Parks and Recreation prepares for upcoming season

Date: 4/18/2022

WARE – With spring in the air and summer right around the corner, Ware Parks and Recreation has a lot in store for the upcoming season.

John Piechota, parks manager, said the spring sports season will kick-off with youth baseball, softball and soccer. As the seasons will soon begin, Piechota said registration is almost full. To register, visit the towns website at https://www.townofware.com/ or contact Piechota at jpiechota@townofware.com
The high school baseball team plays at Memorial Field. Depending on their season, Piechota said they could play through June.

Aside from sports, Piechota said they offer access to the boat ramps and fishing docks along the Ware River. He noted that the boat ramp is handicap accessible.
In June, Parks and Rec. plans to host a summer concert. Last year, the concert was called “Rock the Park,” which included live music, food trucks and more. This year, Piechota said they are thinking about doing something similar, in addition to their annual fireworks.

For five weeks during the summer, Piechota said the Lions Club hosts a concert series. Due to past successes, they are planning on hosting this again.

At Grenville Park, 73 Church St., Piechota said they are “pursuing a new playground.” The new construction will ultimately replace the current structure. Piechota said they are looking to appropriate funds and work out other details, however, they are hoping to complete this project by summer.
Another project that they will be working on is the replacement of the Reed Municipal Pool, as it has been shut down for safety concerns and is over 80 years old, added Piechota.

He went on to say that a widely popular request by residents was to put in a pickleball court. As Piechota is one of three park commissioners, he said one of the commissioners was made aware of this “huge demand.”

“It seems to be the newest fad,” said Piechota. “It seems to be popular.”
He continued, “We are in the process of converting the tennis courts to a pickleball court.” Once the two courts are painted, Piechota said, “We hope to have them up and running by summer.”

Ware Parks and Recreation also plans to host a 5K, with more information to come.

“We anticipate everything to be back to normal,” as the COVID-19 restrictions have eased, said Piechota.

He noted that Grenville Park is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. The park has “ample walking space,” in addition to its offerings mentioned above, Piechota said.
