Ware Parks Commission looking into reopening town pool

Date: 12/18/2023

WARE — When Reed Municipal Pool closed four years ago, a public survey found that residents still wanted a public pool in Ware. With the Parks and Recreation Commission’s work, that may be possible again.

The Ware Parks Commission is in the process of discussing the different options for reopening Reed Municipal Pool, in addition to the estimated costs of the needed construction, Parks Manager John Piechota told Reminder Publishing.

Piechota explained that the commission has discussed building a splash pad as part of the current playground as well as adding a building for bathrooms and changing clothes. They have also talked about a “preliminary pool layout,” he said.

“We will be continuing [the] conversation throughout the winter months and eventually working with [the] Finance Committee on funding options,” Piechota stated.

While 2019 estimates from the Department of Planning and Community Development placed the cost of the project around $3 million, including the needed repairs and additional improvements to the property, Piechota was not able to provide Reminder Publishing with an updated cost estimate.

During an April 3 presentation to the Parks Commission, construction company AECOM reported that its survey of Reed Municipal Pool found that the cost estimate could be reduced if certain items from the previous pool could be used instead of being replaced, such as the pool’s filtration system.

Parks Commission discussions from April 12 also proposed the possibility of utilizing grants to reduce the cost of the project.
