WARE — Superintendent of Schools Michael Lovato appeared before the Selectboard at its Aug. 8 meeting to speak about the updates and happenings in the schools.
Lovato, previously the assistant superintendent of teaching and learning in the Chelsea Public Schools, was selected to replace former Superintendent Marlene DiLeo, whose contract expired at the end of the 2022-23 school yead and was not renewed. He started his new role on July 1.
“For the last month, we have been restructuring and heading to where we should be,” said Lovato. He mentioned that he wants to “keep things like a family” within the schools and make sure that all staff can feel his support.
“My focus will be academically based and how we can prepare our students for the future,” said Lovato.
Currently, he is looking to hire a new principal — Ware Junior Senior High School Principal Eugene Rich announced his resignation on July 20 in an email to the school community — and ways to raise test scores.
“I am excited to be educated by our students,” he added.
Justine Caggiano also appeared before the board to give her final report as the human resources director. Caggiano spoke regarding new policies on family and medical leave, explaining the updated policies would make the criteria for family, medical and maternity leave clearer and more concise.
“All of these policy updates have been checked by a legal counsel. I also compared handbooks from surrounding towns like Palmer and Belchertown,” said Caggiano.
The board made a motion to accept the policies, it passes unanimously.
“I want to thank the board for all the support. I hope to continue our relationship,” Caggiano added.
The board also accepted the appointments of several officers to the Police Department, including some very familiar.
“I see a lot of faces I know that I’m very proud of,” said Chair Caitlin McCarthy.
Eric Esteve, Steven Frasier, Jacob Mansfield and Evan Anair were among those appointed who hail from Ware. Hatfield resident Hunter Zygmont was the final officer appointed.
“All five of them did fantastic on the interview process,” said Chief Shawn C. Crevier.
Mitchell Kupperman was also appointed to the Finance Committee through a unanimous vote.
The Historical Commission also spoke to the board about its desire to create a committee for the 250th birthday of America. The board accepted this idea and suggested that seven members be appointed to the committee. McCarthy made a motion to create the committee and it passed unanimously.
