WARE – Workshop 13 is hosting their Summer S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) for Kids program on Wednesdays, July 6 - Aug.17 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Children will be doing weekly challenges using science, technology, engineering, arts and math concepts to make incredible works of arts. The maximum is 10 students per class for ages 7 through 12.
“This is our second year doing this program,” said Graphic Designer/Social Media Marketer Althea Keaton. “This is something that Workshop 13 decided to do on its own. We know that parents are looking for activities to keep their kids creatively engaged during the summer and also engaged with other forms of education.”
Workshop 13 is a nonprofit cultural arts and learning center with three campuses. Their main location is at 13 Church St. in Ware – an old, renovated church building that now serves the community as an arts space. They have art studios downstairs offering classes to adults and children. Their second floor is their grand hall, which is a performing arts theater where they have concerts, open mic, small theater performances as well as receptions and other private events. Their third floor is a music studio where they do recordings. Around the corner on Main Street, Workshop 13 has a fully equipped pottery studio called ClayWorks offering classes and studio space to established potters. Then adjacent to ClayWorks, they have an Art Works Gallery which is an exhibition space.
Here’s the itinerary of the workshops:
• July 13 – Cyanotype (sun prints) – Students will be outside learning the technique of printmaking using the sun.
• July 20 – Parabolic Curve String Art – Students will be using wood, nails, hammer, string, measuring and math to make straight lines into a curve.
• July 27 – Kaleidoscopes – Students will be learning how to make their own kaleidoscopes using mirrors, colors, shapes and other objects.
• Aug. 3 – Eco Printmaking & Dying – Students will be using vegetables, leaves, dead bugs and all kinds of materials to make prints and dye fabric.
• Aug. 10 – Ebru Marbling – Students will learn the ancient art of Ebru Marbling to print on fabric and paper.
• Aug. 17 – Batik T-shirts – Students will be working with resists, paints and dyes to make their own T-shirts.
“Through this S.T.E.A.M program, we want kids to form friendships, creativity and curiosity about the world around them,” Keaton replied. “How they can make art while also using elements of technology, engineering and math.”
They went on to say, “Students will be introduced to new concepts and challenges. Our instructors will walk them through the principles behind each activity along with the instructions for the activity itself. The kids can walk away from the day having completed arts they can be proud of.”
