WEST SPRINGFIELD – A few weeks after the approval of the vaccination site on March 26, Mayor William Reichelt announced the start of the doses beginning April 20 on Big E grounds.
The site will be providing the first set of the Moderna vaccine at noon April 20 and will then be operating Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
There will be sign ups available every Wednesday for appointments the following week.
“We have a confirmation for shots from now going into May. Depending on doses being delivered to the state we will be able to go on after that. We hope to have an increasing amount of doses as we move into May. Until then, we are allowing about 1500 vaccinations a week/300 a day capacity,” Reichelt stated.
The vaccination will be located at the transportation building located at Gate 1.
“My Chief Operations Officer Carly Camossi is the site coordinator and has done a great job putting this program together. The collaboration within the community has been great, so we’re looking forward to a very successful vaccination site,” Mayor Reichelt said.
The vaccination site is open to all Massachusetts residents. The state’s website, https://vaccinesignup.mass.gov/#/ and http://Vaccinefinder.org will be available to use. The West Springfield Senior Center will also be able to book appointments over the phone. There is a website in process specifically for people to sign-up at the Big E. More information on sign-ups will be provided before registration opens next week.
The vaccination site was approved on March 26 after a coalition that eventually grew to include West Springfield, Agawam, Westfield, Southwick, Granville and Tolland sent a series of proposals to the state with little initial success.
Fire department paramedics from the towns involved will administer the vaccinations and the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department will provide personnel to assist with the registration process.
