Board of Health to consider West Springfield mask mandate

Date: 9/1/2021

WEST SPRINGFIELD – With the start of the Big E quickly approaching, local health officials will weigh whether a community-wide mask mandate would be necessary.

Calling into consideration cancellations for some local fairs and the mandating of masks within West Springfield Public Schools, the local Board of Health plans to host a meeting within the next few weeks regarding masking across the city of West Springfield, Director of Public Health Jeanne Galloway confirmed to Reminder Publishing.

Most recently, the Board of Directors for the Union Agricultural & Horticultural Society announced it had voted to cancel the 2021 Blandford Fair due to “the increasing number of COVID-19 cases.”

As of press time, a date for that meeting of the Board of Health had not been scheduled.

Mayor William Reichelt said he does not want to mandate masks for fairgoers, however the Board of Health will be the ones making that decision.

Big E officials said they have been diligent and are updating their website with the most current health and safety protocols. Big E Communications and Public Relations Manager Catherine Pappas referred Reminder Publishing to that website for more information, which reads, “The Big E adheres to current Massachusetts and city of West Springfield COVID-19 regulations and guidance and has taken action to protect the health and well being of our customers and employees.”
