Fishing derby to benefit the CHD’s All In programming

Date: 6/21/2021

WEST SPRINGFIELD – An inaugural fishing derby to benefit the Center for Human Development’s (CHD) All In programming will take place on June 26.

According to the CHD website, “CHD All In is a leading provider of adaptive sports and recreation in the Western Massachusetts area. Since 1978, we have been helping children, teens and adults living with a physical, vision and/or developmental disability realize their limitless potential through innovative programming …”

Ryan Kincade, outreach coordinator for All In said, “We missed a whole year of programs because of the pandemic.” A few months ago, Kincade and his team were thinking of some new and creative programs to put on. In the past, they have put on dance programs, rock climbing, sled hockey and more.

CHD All In has also had a fishing program for many years. Typically, this program takes place at the West Springfield Fish and Game Club. Through the generosity of Michael Luciani, board member of West Springfield Fish and Game Club, Kincade said they received access to host their derby here as well.

Kincade explained, the purpose of this benefit is to “raise funds and keep costs low.” The money raised goes towards all the programming throughout the year.

The derby is open to the community. “It’s very family oriented,”  he added.

Registration will open at 8 a.m. and fishing will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. After the derby is complete, CHD All In officials will tally up the points and trophies will be awarded to first and second place winners in both age categories – kids and adults.

Additional perks include Pat Kelly from Rock 102 who will be the DJ and emcee of the event. Lunch will also be provided to all participants.

To partake in the derby, people must pre-register by visiting chd.org/fishingderby.

So far, Kincade said about 40 people have signed up, however, they are aiming for 50.

“The event is small this year, but we’re hoping to grow in the future. We’re very excited- our first fundraiser since COVID,” he said.

Kincade said they are always looking for participants and volunteers for all activities. He encourages everyone to join in and donate to help the cause.
