Kiwanis Club to host Wheels on Parade at West Springfield High School

Date: 6/21/2021

AGAWAM/WEST SPRINGFIELD – The Agawam/West Springfield Kiwanis Club will sponsor its inaugural “Wheels on Parade” on June 26.

The Kiwanis Club is a volunteer organization and international club that focuses on youth.

“We’re all about the youth of America,” said Kiwanis Club member Linda Parent.

For several years, they have put on a “Bike Rodeo” in the parking lot of the West Springfield Municipal Building. Mayor William Reichelt recalled, “They give helmets away and we have our police there to give bike and safety training.”

Due to the pandemic last year, they were unable to host this event, along with the loss of many other fundraisers.

This year, the Kiwanis Club created the “Wheels on Parade.” This contest allows participants to decorate their bikes, scooters, wagons or wheelchairs and bring them to the West Springfield High School parking lot.

From 10 to 11:30 a.m., kids will be able to parade around with their decorative new wheels. The event judges include Mayor Reichelt, Kathy Alevras and State Rep. Mike Flynn.

Prizes will be awarded to first place finishers in each of the three age categories: 7 and under, 8 to 12, and 13 plus.

Runners up will also receive a prize.

The winners in each category will get a chance to ride in the Big E Parade on West Springfield day.

Parent said not only does this educate children, but, “it’s all about creating community.”

To participate in this event, no pre-registration is required. The event will take place, rain or shine, and there is no cost for entry.

“We’re hoping for a great turnout,” said Parent.

The Kiwanis Club will be hosting additional events in 2021 such as a jack-o’lantern and snowman building contest.
