New baseball dugouts to be installed at the high school

Date: 1/27/2020

WEST SPRINGFIELD – West Springfield High School baseball players will have a place to sit in style during their home games this spring. Two new dugouts are being installed at the baseball field to replace the open-air benches that are currently used.

Athletic Director Glenn Doulette said the site prep work has been completed and the dugouts will be installed, “definitely before the start of the season,” which begins the third week in March. The team’s first home game is April 4.

The dugouts cost a total of $60,220, half of which the town paid for. The other half was funded by the West Springfield High School Baseball Boosters with help from the Big E Trust.

Built by United Concrete, the long, roofed structures are open in the front with two window cutouts on the back wall and a doorway at either end.

Doulette said the addition of the dugouts is beneficial to the “make-up of the facility, the safety issue of getting the players out of the elements,” and “keeping the equipment in better condition.”

“Since I’ve been here, the town has been putting a lot of effort into improving, not just [the high school], but the whole town. Scott Moore, [director of Central Maintenance] is doing a great job,” said Doulette.

“Our ultimate goal is to have one of the best high school facilities in Western Massachusetts,” Doulette said.
