WEST SPRINGFIELD – The watercolors of Springfield artist Noreen Acconcio are being featured through the month of November at an exhibit at the West Springfield Public Library.
Now retired after careers as a teacher and speech pathologist, Acconcio explained to Reminder Publishing she started painting 14 years ago when she started with watercolors. She took a workshop offered at the Indian Orchard Mills.
She said with a laugh that she enjoyed the easy clean-ups that medium gave her.
While she was not formally trained, she said, “The arts have always been an integral part of my life.” She added that she is also a singer.
Other workshops exploring other mediums followed, and now she creates art painting with pastels, alcohol ink and oil.
She enjoys painting subjects found in nature: animals, landscapes, seascapes, a fruit or flower.
“I always like to paint something with a connection to nature,” she said.
A painting starts with good composition, she explained, and she works from a photo she has taken.
She has exhibited multiple times. In the spring of 2018, one of her paintings was accepted into the Academic Artists Association exhibit, which is a national juried show. She has had solo shows at the Burnett Gallery, Springfield Central Library, and the South Hadley Library.
She is a member of the Scantic River Artisans and has been active in the Wilbraham Art League.
“It’s been a wonderful journey,” she said.
Her work is on display at the library, at 200 Park St., West Springfield.
