Storrowton Village launches Teen Leadership Experience

Date: 6/15/2021

WEST SPRINGFIELD – Storrowton Village Museum is set to launch a new program and networking opportunity for high school students. “The Teen Leadership Experience,” allows participants to build skills as future leaders, young professionals, and public history advocates.

Beginning the first week of August, the program will run for two weeks – Tuesday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Jessica Fontaine, director of Storrowton Village Museum said for as long as she can remember, there has been an Early American Summer Days program with children between the ages of 7 to 12 facilitated by teens. Fontaine came to Storrowton through this program.

“It was great for teaching leadership to teens,” she said.

Over the years, Fontaine said the camp had become less popular. Through the financial support of the Country School Association of America (CSAA), the program is able to run this year.

According to the information provided by Storrowton Village, “The program will utilize the book and assessment tool ‘Clifton Strengths for Students’ to guide leadership skill building and team dynamics. During the first week of the program, students will have the opportunity to work in two different areas of interest and will choose one track to focus upon and create a project during week two.”

Fontaine said, “Teens involved can learn leadership skills and meet leaders in the community who love history.”

She added, “As we reignite our museum programs following our closure during the pandemic we are thrilled to have the growth of future leaders in public history at the forefront of our rebuilding. We are so grateful for our collaboration with local leaders, including Stan Svec, chair of the History Department at West Springfield High School, to bring this program, many years in the making, to fruition.”

“All students, public, private, or home schooled, are eligible to apply, however, priority consideration will be given to West Springfield residents,” their press release continued. No experience is required.

Fontaine said the application deadline has been extended to June 21. The people who have already applied are still being considered. All applications will be reviewed before acceptance. Only 12 teens will receive the position.
