WEST SPRINGFIELD – While the summer months may be a time of rest and relaxation for some, Mayor William Reichelt can be found biking hundreds of miles for the duration of July.
The mayor – and dozens of others – are taking part in a virtual event known as the “Sufferfest,” which can be completed on a bike anywhere at any time. The Sufferfest began on July 1 and ends July 31.
Although the heat can play a role, Reichelt said he is biking for two valuable reasons. The first is to maintain his first place title from last year, after beating his friend Adam Jaber of Colorado Ski and Bike. However, the most important reason behind the intense biking is to raise money for the West Springfield Boys and Girls Club.
Reichelt said this event came to be last year when Jaber and he decided to compete for the most miles biked. The loser had to pay $300 to the Boys and Girls Club, as Reichelt claimed they suffered through the pandemic.
Although last year’s event wasn’t published until too late, they still raised $5,000 in total to donate to the Boys and Girls Club. As a result, the board, Jaber and Reichelt decided to host this event again.
This year, everyone is welcome to get involved. Reichelt said there are currently 33 people who have joined and, so far, they have raised $3,000. Comparing this to last year's $5,000, Reichelt said, “We’ve almost met that and it just started – we’re thrilled.”
Each week, individuals are recognized for the most miles, most elevation, and the single longest bike ride. If someone logs 100 miles in a week, they will be entered into a raffle to win a gift card to a local business.
When participants sign up, there is a link that allows you to make a donation of choice. The proceeds go directly to the Boys and Girls Club to help provide children and teens with life-enhancing programs.
To log the rides, participants must download the Strava App, which is free.
