WEST SPRINGFIELD – The West Springfield Public Schools will participate in the federal Summer Food Service Program, offering free meals to children under 18, beginning June 28.
Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., children can receive “grab and go” breakfast and lunch. The summer program lasts until Aug. 13, with pick-up location at West Springfield Boys and Girls Club (615 Main St., parking lot), an open site.
Any child under the age of 18 is allowed to receive a free meal, regardless of town residency. No identification is required. Through a waiver and approval with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), parents and guardians are able to pick up these meals for their children.
Dario Nardi, supervisor of School Cafeterias in West Springfield said, “We’re on an honor system – no questions are asked.” There is no limit to how many meals a parent or guardian may pick up, as they are held to this honesty standard.
Nardi explained that they run a weekly cycle, similar to what they do with the Parks and Recreation Department during the summer.
He said they have a “hot meal” which may be a cheeseburger, or something of the sort. There are also cold options, which may be a salad. Children can substitute their meals if they wish to do so.
Additional foods will include fruit, which Nardi said is a staple item. “Everything is pretty much grab and go.”
In the past, West Springfield has participated in the Summer Food Service Program. Nardi said this typically takes place at the elementary school, however, it’s currently under construction.
With the new location at the Boys and Girls Club, Nardi hopes they can reach as many people as possible.
He went on to say, “This is one of our busiest areas- a low income area.” The parking lot and open area is accessible for everyone.
Although COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, Nardi assured that his staff will be wearing masks, gloves, and maintain safe social distance among others.
“Shoutout to the Boys and Girls Club for their help. I’m grateful to them,” Nardi concluded.
