HAMPDEN – Ever wonder what that old silver teapot is worth? The Hampden Historical Society is giving people the chance to find out.
An antiques appraisal will be hosted by the Historical Society at Academy Hall, 616 Main St., on Aug. 31, at 6:30 p.m.
“We had one several years ago,” said Linda Krawiec, president of the Hampden Historical Society. “We had a good crowd and people bought all kinds of things – furniture and teapots and all kinds of things.”
As people bring in their items, Krawiec said they will be handed a number and the items will be appraised on a first come, first-serve basis. A $5 donation to the Historical Society will be collected, for which participants can have one or two items appraised.
Krawiec said there would be an oral appraisal, rather than a written one, and she would be announcing the value of each piece appraised. She said people enjoy learning the value of the items, adding, “That’s why they’re sitting there.”
Krawiec said the appraiser evaluating antiques for the Historical Society worked at Stanton Auctions in Hampden before its closure in 2016.
“I think a wide variety of items is preferred,” Krawiec said. While the room seats about 50 people, she said there was not much room for furniture pieces in Academy Hall. Krawiec said many people have old items from their parent’s estate or something they may have purchased long ago and wonder if it has increased in value. “Some things appreciate, others depreciate,” she remarked.
People will have a chance to share memories about their items and Krawiec said she hoped people would stay after the appraisal for refreshments and to socialize and talk about their antiques.
