WILBRAHAM – The Wilbraham Public Library is offering a different take on Christmas this year. On Dec. 9 at 6 p.m., Irish Historian Sean Murphy will host a virtual presentation, “The History of Christmas and Its Celebration in Ireland.”
A multimedia presentation, the talk will include recorded music and video to create an immersive holiday experience. Murphy will explore the emergence of the annual Christian holiday in Ireland. He will also discuss how earlier pagan traditions from across Europe, influenced and were incorporated into Irish Christmas customs.
“We think it will offer a light, engaging and fun opportunity to consider some of the origins of the Christmas traditions,” Reference Librarian Caroline Welch told Reminder Publishing. “In addition, with traveling restrictions this year, we find that people enjoy the chance to explore other places and cultures virtually.”
All of the library’s programming is currently virtual due to pandemic restrictions. As an unexpected benefit of this, Welch said that they are able to book presenters from a wider geographic area, exposing patrons to a greater variety of programs.
“We try to offer different and varied programs throughout the year,” said Welch. She said that there are more presentations scheduled for after the holiday season.
While this event is free to participate in, registration is necessary. To register or check out upcoming library programs, go online to www.wilbrahamlibrary.org or call 596-6141.
