HAMPDEN – The Scantic River Artisans are hosting an art exhibit on April 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the hopes that locals will come in, meet the artisans, partake in live demonstrations, view the artwork and potentially join their group.
The Scantic River Artisans boasts over 50 members who obtain a wide variety of skill. Some members are painters, while others are authors, jewelry designers, sculptures, wood workers, glass blowers, illustrators and more.
“We’re very fortunate that we have a diverse exhibit,” President of the Scantic River Artisans Nan Hurlburt said.
On the groups website their mission states that they strive to, “connect the community through diverse, dynamic and creative experiences. Dedicated to providing opportunities for local artists of all ages and skill levels to explore, develop and market their creations. Through events and educational programming, the Scantic River Artisans strive to foster the appreciation of visual art and aspires to raise awareness about the relevance and intrinsic value of the visual arts in our community.”
At the art exhibit, the Scantic River Artisans will have ongoing live demonstrations and authors will be in attendance signing their books. All of the pieces shown at the exhibit are up for sale.
Membership to the Scantic River Artisans costs only $20 annually, and gives the artisans the ability to participate in four shows over the course of the year. The fourth exhibit is a juried exhibit that is not only for members of the group, but for people all over New England including Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire artisans. In addition, the Artisans host four workshops a year where members as well as the public are able to learn artistic skills that they may not have been able to otherwise.
“This year our first workshop was a wonderful artist that came in and taught pastel, the next one is how to take better photographs, it’s a live demonstration and is hands-on,” Hurlburt shared. “The third is how to better present your work with framing, matting and prints. Our fourth is going to be a watercolor workshop, it’s an all day workshop and everyone that participates is hands-on.”
The workshops do have additional fees associated with them, however members of the public are encouraged to join.
The Scantic River Art Exhibit will take place at its permanent gallery in the Hampden Senior Center at 104 Allen St. on April 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a reception between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
