Wilbraham resident wins ‘Man Enough to be a Girl Scout’ award

Date: 10/20/2017

WILBRAHAM – One Wilbraham resident and local attorney is being honored in November with the “Man Enough to be a Girl Scout” award at the ToGetHerThere Luncheon.

The luncheon is going to honor five individuals who have made a difference in the community who have shown exceptional achievements in not only their careers, but also who have contributed to their communities, and inspire their colleagues.  Additionally, they embody the Girl Scout’s mission of building females of confidence, courage and character.

Attorney Timothy Murphy of Skoler, Abbott and Presser, P.C. is the recipient of the “Man Enough to be a Girl Scout” award. Murphy’s list of achievements is not short.  He served as a Big Brother for eight years while simultaneously sitting on the board of directors for Big Brothers, Big Sisters.  He is a volunteer at the Springfield Public Schools.  He participated in the Fresh Air Program, which is a program that brings inner city kids to rural or suburban areas for a week or two in the summer.  The kids live with a host family and they are able to experience activities they aren’t able to at their own homes, such as camping, hiking and seeing the stars.  Murphy hosted a 12-year-old from New York City for a week during this past summer.

Additionally, he’s a board of director’s member for the Springfield Regional Chamber of Commerce, a member of the World Affairs Council and the Town of Wilbraham Finance Committee.  Not to mention, his full time job at Skoler, Abbott and Presser, P.C.

It’s easy to wonder, where does one find the time to take part in all of these groups and activities?

“I’m fortunate that I have a job in which I can pretty much control my own schedule.  Sometimes it’s not easy to find the time, but if you believe in the cause or mission, you want to, and so you mostly do,” Murphy said.

Though it’s plain to see why Murphy was chosen for this award, embodying exceptional achievements, community contributions and inspiring his colleagues, he doesn’t feel he’s any different from others.

“I am honored, of course, but I have to admit that at first I wasn’t exactly sure why I received it.  I don’t feel I am that different from most men,” Murphy said humbly.  “I feel a little unworthy because there are so many men out doing amazing things in the community to help kids, boys and girls.”

Murphy has two adult daughters as well as one granddaughter.  Though his daughters weren’t Girl Scouts, his granddaughter is only two years old and he says, “There is still time for her.”

Regardless of his hectic schedule, Murphy says he has a knack for finding down time.  He’s self-proclaimed “soccer obsessed”, enjoys reading, traveling, spending time with his granddaughter and enjoying a good craft beer on his porch.

Murphy will receive his award during the 2017 ToGetHerThere luncheon on Nov. 3 at the Tower Square Hotel in Springfield.
