Hardwick announces candidates for upcoming town election

Date: 4/4/2022

HARDWICK – The Hardwick annual town election is set to take place next week, on April 11.

From 12 to 7 p.m., registered voters in town can visit the Hardwick Elementary School, 76 School House Dr., to cast their ballot.

Town Clerk Ryan Witkos said the candidate list has been finalized.
“We have candidates for all races,” said Witkos. “There are no contested races.”

Kelly Kemp, incumbent, is running for another three-year term as selectman.

Lucinda J. Childs, another incumbent, is running for a three-year term as assessor.

Candidate Brian C. Russell will be running for the Gilbertville-Wheelwright Water Pollution Control Facilities Sewer commissioner. This is a three-year term.

The three-year constable position has three openings. Candidates include incumbents James D. Swett and Eric W. Vollheim, along with Witkos.

Jennifer E. Garvey is running unopposed for a three-year term as the K-12 Quabbin Regional School Committee member.

Ernest J. Warburton is the sole candidate running to become a Board of Health member. This is also a three-year term.

Incumbent Joseph R. Raskett is running again to be the Paige Agricultural Fund trustee. This position is the only one that serves a five-year term.

Two positions are to be filled for the Paige Memorial Library trustees. Candidates include incumbent Vollheim and Edward N. Kelly.

Lastly, John J. Samek is running to become a Planning Board member. He will serve a three-year term.

Witkos explained that although there are no contested races, all of these positions will have write-in options on the ballot as well.

He predicted that town election day will be a “quiet” one.
“When it’s not a contested day, we usually don’t have a huge turnout,” said Witkos.

Nonetheless, he said, “We encourage people to get out and vote.”
