Marijuana facility raises concerns among Hardwick residents

Date: 4/25/2022

HARDWICK - The proposed project of an adult use marijuana cultivation, product manufacturing and retail facility by Zen Acres Farm, has raised concerns among many Hardwick residents.

Zen Acres Farm intends to apply for a license to operate at 228 Barre Rd., in accordance with the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commissions regulations.

During a public informational meeting on April 14, over 150 residents gathered at Hardwick Elementary School to ask questions and make their voices heard. Town Clerk Ryan Witkos said the purpose of these meetings is to find out what residents want. He noted that in this case, the overall consensus was that people do not want a marijuana cultivation, manufacturing and retail facility in town.

“People think it would ruin the town,” he said.

Witkos, who also facilitated the session, told Reminder Publishing that “a multitude” of topics were discussed during the nearly two-hour meeting.

He said that representatives from Zen Acres Farm presented a slideshow presentation, with a general overview of the proposed project. “Unfortunately, [Zen Acres] didn’t have solid plans,” said Witkos. He added that frustration was expressed among residents, due to several unanswered questions.

Witkos explained that retail at Zen Acres is not an option because the town bylaws don’t allow for it. He went on to say that the farm is in land that’s considered “agricultural preservation restriction.” Therefore, in order for this project to move forward, an approval process would have to be reviewed by the commonwealth.

Witkos said this is a “long process,” as Zen Acres Farm would also need to obtain a host agreement and receive approval from the Board of Selectmen. He added that there are several other steps that need to be taken to which Zen Acres Farm is aware of.

He emphasized that the public informational meeting wasn’t an endorsement or a rejection of Zen Acre’s proposed project. Throughout the entire process, Witkos said his role is to remain neutral.

At press time, Witkos said he is “not sure” if Zen Acres Farm will move forward with their proposal or pull out, as they do not have a concrete plan.

“There are a whole bunch of what ifs,” he said.

Hardwick currently has a cannabis establishment, Hardwick Mill Greenery, at 94 Main Street. This is in the Gilbertville part of town. The property owned by Zen Acres Farm is right outside of Hardwick center.
