WEST WARREN – For the first time, the West Warren Library Association is looking to hire an evening library clerk.
Library Director Samantha Evans explained, “We recently had the library director and assistant director resign and become Board members and the hours were split between them both. I was hired as the new director and no assistant director was hired, so I took on all the hours.”
She went on to say, “We weren’t allocated that large of a budget to begin with in the previous years, but this year we were actually provided with a budget slightly larger than we asked for in the town budget request. Both of those factors added to our ability to hire this position.”
Evans told Reminder Publishing the idea for this position came about because the librarian was trying to conduct events, but she could not watch the circulation desk and supervise events. Therefore, it was decided they needed somebody to be able to run the events while somebody is also working at the circulation desk.
The problem presented itself when the library was hosting its summer reading program along with other programs they had during that time like their Bunny program at Dean Park. Evans explained they needed someone to be at the desk while she was at the park running the Bunny program for their summer reading. Though they had the coverage, Evans said it was a strain on their abilities and they need that extra set of hands.
“This position will give us the ability to expand and improve our services,” Evans replied. “We’ll be able to do more programs and events later during the day and have six more hours to have services available with the library which will give us more patrons.”
The library clerk provides a range of services in support of Borrower Services operations including but not limited to running the circulation desk, patron assistance, maintenance of the collection and general library tasks. They’re responsible for using the library’s computerized circulation system to check out and return books, issue new library cards and help patrons of all ages use the library.
The position requires availability on Monday and Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. with flexibility to be a substitute when needed as well as excellent customer service skills, general office, and computer experience, including MS Office and general web browser and email capabilities. Familiarity with Evergreen, the Dewey Decimal System, and the ability to help patrons use the library’s digital resources on a wide variety of electronic devices is a plus.
Evans is hoping to hire someone by the end of November. If they don’t find anyone then, they will extend the search until mid-December. Those interested can call the library at 486-9892 or email Evans at sevans@cwmars.org.
