Shifting the cost of training to the applicant is very bad trend which has been happening for some time. It has not been as visible because public money was used for the training in the form of a major in high school, or a trade school.
Degrees used to be more general, physics, chemistry etc. then the degrees became more specific. Some are useful only for a particular industry or company.
We have seen the ads to learn “Medical Billing Coding.” This skill is not very transferable. It is also likely to change. If you not quickly find a position the knowledge will become obsolete fast.
There are ads which want training or experience in a particular type of software. Since companies have a menagerie of software whatever you learn will only satisfy few companies. In reality a skilled person can transfer from one software to another, and they serve the same function. But the human resource people are scared for their jobs also and they merely assign people to pigeon holes. He does not want to explain why he passed along someone who does not have a box checked off. And even if you qualify, as the software becomes obsolete, so will you.
I wonder if a Nicola Tesla could get job today.
