Biden has a big agenda to face when he comes into office. Climate change is urgent if we want our grandchildren to have any kind of life. Twenty-twenty was the hottest year on record (tied with 2016) even though emissions were down because of the pandemic. He needs the cooperation of both houses of Congress to deal with this crisis. At the same time he has to deal with two plagues both of Trump’s making. The virus is one. We had advance notice and the wherewithal to respond but Trump did essentially nothing. He wanted to keep his profitable businesses open and he wanted to protect the stock market for his donors. Therefore, he crossed his fingers and lied. 390,000 Americans have dies because of his lies and it is still raging. Biden will take charge of the vaccine rollout which Trump has ignored and hopefully the vaccinations will speed up.
The other plague is fascism. The white supremacists, et. al. are the major terrorist threat now. Trump has emboldened them because he is one of them. This is a repeat of Germany in the 1930s. Hitler had the Jews. Trump has the immigrants, gays and brown and black people. The common thread is that both movements rely on white supremacy, an insatiable desire to stay in power and be a dictator in a police state. When Trump failed at the ballot box he went to intimidating election officials into illegally changing the vote and declaring Trump the winner. When that didn’t work he tried the courts and lost 63 out of 64 lawsuits trying to overturn the election. Now he refuses to pay his loyal servant Rudy Giuliani, which is typical for Trump. Since that effort failed he has turned to force. The military would not cooperate but Trump has his own military. He used them in Portland, Oregon to foment violence. They came in unmarked cars, had no ID, no uniforms and were taken for thugs. They did a lot of damage, attacked protestors and made the BLM movement look bad. Now he used them to stage a coup at the Capitol. He organized supporters from all over the country and had them descend on the capitol, while he did a rally to gin up his crowd for violence. Why couldn’t he organize a plan to save us from the virus? Obviously he doesn’t care about us, only about himself and his desire for power and worship. We may not be done with violence from Trump’s fascists.
I hope Biden is up the challenges that lie ahead. We all must assist by engaging one Trump supporter each day.
