There has been recent controversy over South Congregational Church’s decision to shelter a Peruvian national facing deportation. Mayor Domenic Sarno claimed that he would take action against this violation however; the City Council passed an ordinance that prevents the city from interfering with religious institutions that provide sanctuary to immigrants. Where do we draw the line? What is stopping the city council from making Springfield the next “sanctuary city?”
The United States is a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities and more specifically, so is Springfield; we are proud of our mixed ancestry. However, our ancestors came here legally through rigorous screening processes and worked hard to make a living and to provide for their families. We would not be here today if it was not for those hard working men and women who built this country. What right do others have to invade our country, violate our laws, and take a free ride on our tax money? There is nothing wrong with immigrants; we are a nation of immigrants, but these new immigrants must come here legally and work within the system rather than take advantage of it. Allowing a church to shelter a woman is only the first step, soon we may be encouraging illegals to flock to Springfield, jeopardizing our federal funding, and throwing our much needed tax money into an incinerator. Crime has already been on the rise but an increase in illegal immigrants would cause crime to skyrocket as statistics show high rates of gang activity and violent crime among illegals. We have been working hard to rebuild our city and the progress shall not be decimated. It’s our turn.
