MIT report confirms Select Board concerns

Date: 9/22/2021

My name is Diane DiPiero-Saia, a Longmeadow resident, well-educated and as pointed out [Pipeline and climate change weighed by Longmeadow Select Board, Sept. 15] by the Energy and Sustainability  Committee member “residents don’t even know what sustainability options are available.”

I fit into this category. For my edification, I turned to a well-documented and researched report by MIT in the book, “Short Circuiting Policy.” On page 256, on energy innovation, [the author] pointed out that “humans have gone through several energy transitions over the past hundred years: from wood to coal, from coal to oil, from oil to electricity.” Further, profits remain center in this unbalanced discussion and false information (the industry knew about the devastating effects of climate change decades ago. Not unlike what the tobacco industry knew).

I hope Steve Marantz pursues what was quoted in the article: “The fact that Eversource is controlling who gets to ask the questions,....etc.” is also mentioned in the MIT research. So, what next? My view is good media reporting and research and good journalism is certainly needed now more than ever.
