Tosado applauds choice

Date: 8/3/2017

I am happy and proud to congratulate my colleague and newly appointed Chairman of Ways and Means in the Massachusetts Legislature, Jeffrey Sanchez. The appointment is a symbol of what can be accomplished in spite of challenges and in the face of adversity. There are similarities between Jamaica Plain and Springfield, many of which I can relate to and hope will be an inspiration to all of those who aspire to become public servants during these politically tumultuous times.

The Speaker of the House, Robert A. DeLeo, made an excellent and historic choice in appointing Sanchez as the Chairman of the powerful committee of ways and means. I know Speaker DeLeo to be someone that places members in the positions that are most suited to their strengths and for the benefit of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The appointment speaks to the fact that Sanchez is qualified for the job, as well as to this moment in time during which health care and social equality are at the forefront.

In regards to qualifications, Sanchez is an eight-term member of the legislature and has been around long enough to understand how to move effectively in order to get things done. Having recently served as chairman on the Committee on Health Care Financing, he has an understanding of the largest and most complicated line items in the budget he is now tasked with overseeing and fairly distributing for the optimum growth of Massachusetts. Having come up the political ladder the hard way; through municipal government under Mayor Menino, where there is plenty to do and more than enough pressure under which to do it.

When it comes to historic significance, Speaker DeLeo made the perfect move in selecting Sanchez not only for his professional qualifications, but for who he is as a person. Sanchez is the first Latino and person of color to be tapped for the chairmanship on Ways and Means, a feat that provides inspiration to a new wave of young and diverse advocates and activists working to make the world a better place. Sanchez grew up in the projects of Boston, worked in a homeless shelter in San Diego, and worked in the Menino administration in many capacities that had him directly dealing with constituents on the issues that mattered most to them. He understands the community and the entire state at that hands on level. Many young men and women of color now have an example that not only embodies excellence in public service, but that is also relatable.

Having experienced many instances bearing parallels to Chairman Sanchez and his own history, I am honored to work with him to serve the interests of our communities throughout the Commonwealth.  Having been a social worker for my professional life, I am excited to work with a chair that possesses a deep understanding of underserved communities and their needs. Growing up in Springfield, I respect Chairman Sanchez for not letting statistics or circumstances define him or prevent him from working on behalf of the citizens of Massachusetts. I hope that Speaker DeLeo’s appointment of Chairman Sanchez to Ways and Means provides inspiration for all young men and women looking to be involved in public service.
