We should take care of our own

Date: 12/4/2015

Regarding turning our backs on refugees is turning our backs on our values:

I can understand Gov. Baker wanting more information before accepting refugees from the Middle East, such as how can they be properly vetted before admission to our country when they come from countries that really don’t have any records on them. It’s also touching and understandable to read in this article what the letter says from a number of clergy on why we should just open our doors to all refugees. Their letter also goes on to say that some Somali refugees were placed in inadequate housing and their children face an up-hill climb in school.

But it’s really ironic to focus on admitting refugees from other countries after reading state Sen. Eric Lester’s letter in the same paper about 210,000 people in Western Massachusetts having to struggle getting an adequate food supply, and the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts providing food assistance to 15,000 families.

We can’t take care of our own citizens, how are we going to take care of more refugees?
