Springfield, welcome to your new community newspaperDate: 8/3/2022 Hello folks, please allow me to introduce the newspaper you are holding.
I’m Mike Dobbs, the executive editor of Reminder Publishing, and what you’re reading is an introduction to our newest edition serving the city of Springfield.
Founded in 1962 by the Buendo family in East Longmeadow, The Reminder reflects the communities it was designed to serve. We are noting our 60th anniversary later this year.
The Buendos started expanding with the introduction of Prime for readers 45 years of age and older, and the acquisition of The Chicopee Herald in the late 1990s. The company then grew to include an edition serving Westfield, West Springfield and Agawam.
The Buendos sold the company to Advance four years ago. Advance is the company that locally owns The Republican and MassLive. We are a separate company within that organization with offices in East Longmeadow and Westfield. What we specialize in is the type of news that has frequently been dropped by other local media. We cover the communities we serve with local government news, stories about interesting people and events as well as sports photography. For instance, our reporters go to events such as city council and school committee meetings on a regular basis.
We have an editorial philosophy that has seemed to work well with our readers. As executive editor, I don’t make political endorsements. The authors sign their editorials and I require letters to the editor to be signed as well.
We believe in advances – stories that tell readers about an upcoming event – as well as following up on a story until it’s completed. We write about entertainment offerings, and we love working on food stories.
With this new edition, we now publish 12 weekly home-delivered community newspapers. We have editions that cover Easthampton; Northampton; East Longmeadow/Longmeadow/Hampden/Wilbraham; Hadley/Amherst; Agawam/West Springfield; Ludlow/Belchertown; Palmer/Monson/Ware; and Holyoke/Granby/South Hadley. The Original Pennysaver covers Westfield, Southwick and the Hilltowns, and The Chicopee Herald serves Chicopee. We are trying with our various editions to address the problem of “news deserts,” areas that other media don’t cover.
This new Springfield edition comes in two zoned newspapers that roughly divide the city in north and south zones along State Street. The reason for this is to give advertisers an affordable option of either being in one or both editions.
The bylined Springfield news stories by Matt Conway and myself will appear in both editions. I’m unusual in this industry as someone with my title usually has given up reporting, but I’ve wanted to be a writer since junior high school and I enjoy going to events, meeting people and telling their stories.
Covering Springfield is nothing new for us as those stories have been appearing in The Chicopee Herald and the East Longmeadow edition for years. What is different is a renewed focus on the city that is the capitol of Western Massachusetts.
I don’t want to sound as if I’m bragging, but we are probably the only newspaper company to add editions during the coronavirus pandemic. I’m humbled to say that advertisers and readers like what we do.
We have one of the biggest newsrooms in the state and with this Springfield edition we will be printing 256,943 copies serving more than 431,000 readers. And I think that providing a city as large as Springfield with a home-delivered free community weekly is something singular. I know of no other company that is attempting such a challenge.
We believe in this city, its history and its potential for the future. We feel every edition is a partnership between our staff, our readers and our advertisers and we strive to be as responsive as possible to what is happening in our communities.
