Out on Top

Here is to a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year to our reading audience.

The Falcons finished out 2006 with three games in three nights and came out on top two of the three. A Friday game in Portland kicked of the weekend. If there was ever a game in which a goalie made the DIFFERENCE, then you had to see to believe the performance of Karri Ramo. Portland dominated the game, outshooting the Falcons 29-6, but could only get one by our stellar goaltending. We came alive in the third to score two goals in a two minute span to take the lead. Ramo makes a number of brilliant saves in the last two minutes as Portland pulls their goalie for the extra attacker and does everything but score. Milley and Healey scored the goals and the Falcons dash out of town with the win.

Right back home the next night , against a team that we have not faced in over two months, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. A see-saw battle for two periods, the Falcons get some breathing room early in the 3rd, and hold on for a hard fought 3-1 win. Boutin starts in goal and plays very well, making a number of key saves until the Falcons could get the two goal lead and ride it to the finish. Doug O'Brien scores his first goal of the year and Corso and Delmore chip in the winner and insurance goal respectively. Another energetic crowd of close to 4,000 shows their appreciation throughout the game.

No rest for the weary as the Falcons travel to Manchester to take on the first place Monarchs on New year's Eve to close out 2006. The purple and gold prove to be too much on this night and pitch a 3-0 shutout. The effort was there, but a speedy Manchester team used a balanced attack and won the battle of the special teams.

With 2006 behind us, the New Year brings plenty of optimism. Although there is much work to do, the team has shown on a number of occasions that when they play within their individual and team capabilities, they can compete with everyone in the league. With continued strong goaltending and steady and simple play in front of them, the young Falcon team looks ahead to the challenge of the last half of the season.

We hope that you will come out to see us in person!

Till next week! Coach Stirling
