Area athletes compete at Games

Colorado Springs, CO was the setting for the bi-annual State Games of America. The event featured athletes from 46 states participating in 24 different athletic events held from July 28-31. Athletes from 46 of the 49 states which hold state games were represented, bringing total athlete participation in this year's games to 9,049.

The emotion and moving Olympic style opening ceremonies in the World Arena featured a parade of athletes, athletic exhibitions and a State Games of America torch run and flame lighting by Olympic Gold Wrestling Medalist Rulon Gardener. Country music singing star Mark Wills performed and appearances by dignitaries, guest speakers and other musical guest performers rounded out the evening.

The figure skating venue was the state of the art World Arena complex, home of the Broadmoor Skating Club. Eight hundred seventy-four skaters, including 15 from the Little Sun Valley Skating Club, were entered in a variety of skating competitions held at this world class arena and adjacent training facilities.

Local club medalists included:

LeAnne Lessard of Chicopee winning a gold medal for Solo Showcase Bronze E.

Lucia Montalvo of Chicopee winning a bronze medal for Basic Graduate C compulsory moves.

Ashley Desmond of Enfield, CT winning Gold medals for both Juvenile Young Adult compulsory moves and young Adult Juvenile Ladies freeskate.

Anna Rokhkind of East Longmeadow, winning a bronze medal for Pre-Juvenile D compulsory moves and a silver medal for her Restricted Pre-Juvenile freeskate.

Brittani Morgan of Springfield winning the silver medal for Preliminary D compulsory moves.

Rebecca Pratt of Longmeadow winning the bronze medal for Unrestricted Intermediate C freeskate.

Ashley Assad of Wilbraham winning the bronze medals for Solo Showcase Group A and Preliminary B freeskate.
