’Chaug boys’ swimming wins seventh-straight sectional title

SPRINGFIELD – The Minnechaug Regional High School boys swimming and diving team won its seventh-straight Western Massachusetts sectional title on Feb. 9.

The Falcons blew away the competition with a strong finish after trailing Westfield earlier in the meet, finishing with 343 points. Second-place Amherst had 267 and Westfield was third with 260.

Tommy Normoyle, who also received the 2014 High Point Award for the most points by a senior in a four-year career, won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.21 and the 200-yard medley relay in 1:58.95 to lead the Falcons.

David Adamski finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.93) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.25). Karl Tomlinson was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (57.77) and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (51.62) while Dan Edgerton placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.07) and eighth in the 100-yard backstroke (59.50). James Webber took fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.76).

Longmeadow finished fourth with 235 points overall, led by Justin Liu, who placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.37 and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing in 2:02.57.

Charly Blazy was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.10) and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (23.38). Eric Gibson was fourth in diving with a score of 318.80, followed by AJ Nolan in fifth with 308.75 points. Michael Chen took fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.16) and eighth in the 100-yard butterfly (58.80).

Ben Guilmette was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and ninth in the 100-yard freestyle (51.85) for fifth-place East Longmeadow (173.5 points). Benjamin Goulart placed seventh in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.83) and the 100-yard butterfly (58.75), while, Jack Moynihan took sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (58.99) and Alex Butcher took seventh in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.49).

For the girls, Longmeadow finished third with 227 points behind second-place Westfield (251.5 points) and champion Northampton (312 points).

Jerrica Li achieved All America consideration with her winning time of 2:03.63 in the 200-yard individual medley and also won the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:06.07.

Maria Caputo finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.33) and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (55.92) Emilee Smith was eighth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.43).

Allison Echeverria was second in diving with a score of 414.75, while Mary Catherine Carrol took sixth (335.30 points) and Quinn Rafferty finished seventh (323.75).

For seventh-place Minnechaug (149.5 points), Lauren Quinn took second in the 100-yard butterfly (58.02) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.50), while Kait Kelly finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.05) and eighth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.23). Jordan Setian was fourth in diving with a score of 355.85, while Kayla Gurney was ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.15).

Alexandria Estanis led East Longmeadow (13th place, 63 points) with a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.48) and an eight-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:22.74).
