East Longmeadow girls’ indoor track fares well at Holiday Qualifier

ROXBURY CROSSING – The East Longmeadow girls’ track and field team fared well at the Holiday Qualifier in which more than 30 schools participated at the Reggie Lewis Center on Dec. 27.

In the team pentathlon, East Longmeadow finished fourth in the State, led by Abby Laughlin’s new indoor school record in the 800 meter run of 2:32.12.

Rebecca Varney won the high hurdles with a time of 9.39 seconds. and also finished fifth in the long jump behind Kayla Fraser who leaped a personal best 15 feet, 1 3/4 inches to finish third.

A makeshift 4 x 200 relay team of Stephanie Maciorowski, Lauren Champigny, Morgan Voight and Shannon Kennedy secured third place with a time of 1:54.34.

Felix nets game-highs in Puerto Rico, honored by MASCAC

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Westfield State University (WSU) women’s basketball’s junior center Gabby Felix of Springfield was named to the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference honor roll on Jan. 5.

Felix scored a game-high 22 points, connecting on 9 of 13 field goal attempts and 4 of 5 free throws, but she was the only Owl to score in double figures as No. 11 Montclair State University topped WSU 73-62, in the San Juan Shootout at the Mario Morales Coliseum on Dec. 28.

Felix also netted 16 points – tied for the game-high – and pulled down eight rebounds 65-57 victory over Mount Holyoke College in the tournament on Dec. 30.

After earning the award, Felix had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead WSU to a 67-51 victory over Suffolk University on Jan. 6.

Ludlow native Elisha Homich, a senior guard for Bridgewater State University, was also named to the list. She earned all-tournament honors for her efforts at the Key Largo Classic after averaging 14.5 points and six rebounds, including 12 points and five assists in a 67-64 semifinal loss to Keene State University and 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists in a 68-62 loss to Emmanuel College.

Sanchez sparks Owls in second half

BROOKLINE – Jesus Sanchez of Springfield scored the first eight points of the second half and 13 for the game as WSU rolled to an 84-41 victory over Newbury College on Jan. 6.

Ferrentino leads AIC to wins

ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior forward Krista Ferrentino of East Longmeadow netted a team-high 22 and nine boards American International College (AIC) women's basketball team outlasted the University of the District of Columbia 85-79 on Jan. 4.

Ferrentino also notched a game-high 20 points as the Yellow Jackets won their second game in the Saint Rose Holiday Classic on Dec. 22 by defeating Dominican College 70-52.

Ferrentino chipped in with 16 points in the opening game, a 76-52 Yellow Jackets victory.

Ferrentino has yet to record less than double digits in scoring this season, averaging 16.3 points per game to go along with 6.6 rebounds per contest as of Jan. 6.

Strohman takes second at Williams Invitational

WILLIAMSTOWN – Jacob Strohman of East Longmeadow finished in second place in the 141-pound division as the Springfield College wrestling team won the Williams College Invitational on Jan. 4.

Strohman posted two pins, including a fall in 6:40 against the top-seed, Carson Brooks of Williams, to advance to the title match. He lost an 11-6 decision in the title match. The second-place finish was the freshman’s best as a collegiate wrestler.

Phillips wins two in Springfield College’s tri-meet sweep

SPRINGFIELD – Callie Phillips of East Longmeadow was a double winner in the Springfield College women's swimming & diving team’s Jan. 4 tri-meet sweep, taking the 200 -yard freestyle in 1:59.08 and the 100-yard freestyle in 55.90.

The Pride topped Hartwick, 184-109 and Union, 166-127.

Delaney Dyjak of Ludlow, posted a winning time of 25.77 in the 50-yard freestyle. Christiana Greco of Wilbraham was part of a winning 200-yard medley relay team and earned a second place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.26.

Michael Normoyle of Springfield won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.53 for the men, who lost to Union 191-109 and Hartwick 180-114.

WNE men’s hoop starts 2014 with loss to RWU

BRISTOL, R.I. – Springfield’s Musa Elsir netted 15 points and East Longmeadow native Ryan Mickiewicz added nine points, but visiting Western New England University (WNE) began a new calendar year with a 76-65 Commonwealth Coast Conference men’s basketball loss at Roger Williams on Jan. 4.

Adamopoulos helps Pride to seventh-straight win

SPRINGFIELD – Ava Adamopoulos of Ludlow had a team-high eight points off the bench for Springfield College as the Pride women's basketball team earned its seventh-straight win, 51-38 over visiting Clark University on Jan. 4.

Bosworth nets career high at Naismith Classic

SPRINGFIELD – East Longmeadow native Josh Bosworth scored a career-high 14 points in the Lyndon State men’s basketball team’s 84-77 loss to Springfield College in the first round of the Hampton Inn/West Springfield Naismith Classic on Jan. 3.

Bosworth also contributed seven points in the Hornets’ 77-55 loss to Wesleyan in the consolation game on Jan. 4.

As of Jan. 9, the freshman forward is averaging 6.9 points and 5 rebounds per game while starting all but one game for Lyndon State.
