NEW YORK – East Longmeadow’s Paige Suse placed 24th in the high jump at the New Balance Indoor Track and Field Nationals, which took place at The Armory Track & Field Center March 13 to 15.
With a jump of 5 feet, 2 1/2 inches, Suse was second among Massachusetts jumpers.
Suse, who also placed 19th at the New England Championships in Boston recently, is committed to Northeastern University.
WILBRAHAM – Emma Cowles headlined the list of outstanding participants at the recent Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championships.
She was a finalist in the Western Massachusetts regional competition after winning the St. Cecilia Knights of Columbus Council and the Springfield District competitions.
Patrick Cowles, Taylor Morrison, Trenton McInerny, Amir Ardolino, Salvatore Buono and John Cowles were also champions at the St. Cecilia Knights of Columbus Council and the Springfield District competitions.
SPRINGFIELD – Western New England University men’s lacrosse player Keegan Dudeck of Longmeadow was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week on March 16.
Dudeck led the Golden Bears offense by totaling 11 points on five goals and six assists in a 1-1 week for Western New England. In a 14-11 triumph over Trinity (CT), the engineering major collected seven points on two goals and five assists while picking up two ground balls.
In an 11-9 setback against 2014 NCAA Quarterfinalist and nationally No. 6-ranked SUNY Cortland, he led the Golden Bears with three goals and one assist.
For the week, Dudeck shot 45 percent (5-of-11). On the season, he ranks third in the CCC with nine assists and has a second-team-leading 16 points.
After receiving the honor, Dudeck netted an insurance goal and registered two assists as the Western New England College men’s lacrosse team topped St. Lawrence 16-13 the same day.
WESTON – Elms College men’s volleyball senior setter Kevin Welsh of Wilbraham recorded his 2,000-career assist midway through the first set on a kill by Blake Fry, but Regis College earned a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-19) sweep over the Blazers on March 17.
On the day, Welsh paced the offense by dishing out a team-high 18 assists while also chipping in with six digs and three kills.
Dorsey starts season off strong
SPRINGFIELD – The Springfield College women’s lacrosse team received a four-point performance from Michelle Dorsey of Wilbraham – three goals and one assist – as the Pride defeated the Keene State Owls 14-6 on March 17.
Springfield College also received a three-goal performance from Dorsey as the team opened up its annual Spring Break trip to Florida with an 11-6 win over SUNY Oswego on March 15.
CLERMONT, Fla. – Yami Lopez-Perez of Springfield had a breakout performance in a pair of losses for the American International College softball team, going 4-for-7 on the day.
She went 3-for-4 at the plate, including an RBI triple, and finished the day with two RBIs and a run scored, but the Yellow Jackets fell 10-5 to the University of Bridgeport on March 13.
Lopez-Perez also went 1-for-3 in a 2-0 loss to Mercy the same day.
