Falcons make history with 10th straight win

Date: 12/12/2014

SPRINGFIELD – The Springfield Falcons set a franchise record of 10 consecutive wins with a 3-2 victory over the Norfolk Admirals on Dec. 5 at the MassMutual Center, then extended the streak to 11 with a 1-0 shootout win over the Hartford Wolf Pack Dec. 6 at the XL Center.

To break the record, right wing Trent Vogelhuber netted the eventual game-winning goal at the 1:47 mark of the second period.  The win breaks the previous nine-game streak set from March 6 to March 28, 1998.

Springfield goaltender Anton Forsberg earned his ninth-straight victory, turning aside 27 of 29 shots. Norfolk goaltender Yann Danis stopped 27 of 30.

The Falcons lit the lamp twice in the first period before getting a response from the Admirals. Marko Dano was waiting in front of the net to redirect Austin Madaisky’s feed from the right corner and put the Falcons on the board 5:23 into the period. Denny Urban picked up a point for the secondary assist. The tally puts Dano on a three-game point streak, with two goals and an assist in the last three contests.

Springfield extended their lead just past the halfway mark of the opening frame. While on the man-advantage, Madaisky took a shot from the high slot that ricocheted off Danis’ pads and onto the stick of T.J. Tynan in the left circle. A cross-crease pass set Ryan Craig up to burry his ninth of the season from the right post. Tynan is also on a three-game point streak, notching an assist in each of the last three games.

Just over a minute later, the Admirals took one back. With Norfolk defenseman Andrew O’Brien serving a double minor for high-sticking, the Admirals set up a breakaway and potted a short-handed goal. Rickard Rakell passed ahead to Max Friberg, who carried the puck across the blue line and beat Forsberg from the right wing circle. David MacDonald also earned a point on the play.

Both teams added one to their score in the second period. Just 1:47 in, the Falcons won the faceoff in the right circle and pushed the puck out to Josh Anderson. Anderson set Denny Urban up for a shot from the right point that was tipped in by Vogelhuber in front of the cage.

The next night, Sean Collins netted the game-winning goal in the first round of the shootout to top the Wolf Pack. This was the Falcons' first shootout of the season.

The victory put the Falcons on top of the American Hockey League beside the Utica Comets with 35 points heading into the Dec. 10 game against the Syracuse Crunch.

Forsberg earned his 10th straight win with a shutout, stopping all 30 shots in regulation and turning aside all three shots in the shootout.

Collins tallied the only goal of the contest. He skated in from the left side, faked a shot and backhanded the puck past Cedrick Desjardins.
