Footit garners back-to-back MASCAC honors

BUZZARDS BAY – Wilbraham’s Mara Footit, a sophomore at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, was named to the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) weekly honor roll for the second straight week on Sept. 29.

Footit posted an 8th place individual finish in a field of 99 runners with a time of 26:33 over the 6K layout, leading the Buccaneers to a fifth place team finish at the Elms Blazer Classic.

Emma Bernard of Springfield was 25th for host Elms College with a time of 29:35.

Mercieri nets insurance goal as WNE tops Gordon
SPRINGFIELD – East Longmeadow’s Becca Mercieri closed the scoring in the 74th minute as the Western New England University women’s soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over Gordon College on Sept. 27.

Matroni nets two in WSU win over Bridgewater State
BIRDGEWATER – Kate Matroni of Hampden chipped in with two goals and a helper while two other Westfield State University (WSU) women’s soccer players produced hat tricks as the Owls cruised to an 8-1 win over Bridgewater State University on Sept. 27.

Netminder Anne Stack of East Longmeadow picked up the win between the pipes for WSU as she made three saves in a little under 70 minutes of work.

O’Connor paces Owls at Middlebury Invitational
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – WSU’s Lana O’Connor placed 20th to lead the Owls at the Middlebury Invitational women’s golf tournament.  O'Connor shot rounds of 84 and 87 (171) at the Ralph Mhyre Golf course on Middelbury’s campus.

Mack strong in Elms College split
CHICOPEE – Elms College women’s volleyball outside hitter Alexandra Mack had a strong day in a split tri-meet with Rhode Island College and Castleton State College on Sept. 27.

The Wilbraham native had 22 digs and three aces in a four set loss (20-25, 25-14, 21-25, 15-25) to Rhode Island College, then later totaled 16 digs, nine kills and five aces as the Blazers defeated Castleton State 3-1 (22-25, 29-27, 25-16, 25-20).
