The New England Mutiny is pleased to announce that Samantha Fortier of Wilbraham has signed with the club for the 2007 season and she will be in uniform for the team's regular season home opener on Saturday, May 19 at 7 p.m. at Agawam High School. The Mutiny begins their fifth campaign in the Women's Premier Soccer League, the highest level of women's soccer in the United States. The New England Mutiny will have a special ceremony dedicated to the memory of the tragic events at Virginia Tech. The Mutiny's opponent that night will be the Maryland Pride. Over its long history, the Pride has utilized several players from Virginia Tech University. A portion of the gate receipts as well as a jersey auction will be conducted with the proceeds going to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. Fans are encouraged to wear maroon and orange to show their support. "The New England Mutiny is more than a soccer team and we are in a unique position to give back to the community and make an impact on our youth," stated owner Joe Ferrara. "All the teams in the WPSL have close relationships with colleges and universities throughout the nation and the tragic events of April 16th go beyond Blacksburg, Virginia," Ferrara added. Fortier, who played at Minnechaug Regional High School and will be attending Clemson University, led all Division 1 players in scoring this past fall. Fortier was the only player in school history to tally 100 points in three years and she was recently awarded the honor of Western Mass. Player of the Year. In its history, the Mutiny remains committed to signing the Valley's top female players. Among other local heroes, the Mutiny has inked the last five Western Mass Players of the Year. The Mutiny began its commitment to local talent with the signing of Jenny Maurer (East Longmeadow) in 2003. Maurer was voted Massachusetts State Player of the Year after her senior season with the Spartans. The following season the Mutiny signed another State Player of the Year in Northampton's Katie Coffey. The 2005 Western Mass Player of the Year, Caroline Downey (Springfield), has committed to the Mutiny for '07. Last season, Western Mass Player of the Year Amanda Santos (West Springfield) donned the Mutiny colors in 2006. The Mutiny have parlayed their local players with National team members, former professionals of the WUSA, international stars and top college players to win the Eastern Conference in three of the last four seasons.
