Local golfers qualify for Massachusetts Amateur Championship

GREATER SPRINGFIELD – Several local golfers recently qualified as participants or alternates in this year’s Massachusetts Amateur Championship taking place July 13 to 17.

Derek Yvon of Springfield Country Club and Springfield shot a 3-under-par score of 67 at the June 15 qualifying tournament at Wyantenuck Country Club in Great Barrington.

Colin Izzo, playing out of The Ranch Golf Club and hailing from Longmeadow, finished that day with a score of 73, good for a tie for second place.

Patrick Oleksak of Longmeadow Country Club and Feeding Hills place third at the June 24 qualifier at Andover Country Club, with a one-under-par round of 71.

Matt Perry of Springfield Country Club and Springfield earned alternate status on June 23 at the Cape Cod Country Club qualifier in East Falmouth with a score of 74.

Lagodich named Brine high school lacrosse All America

WILBRAHAM – Tessa Lagodich, daughter of James & Cheryl Lagodich, a 10th grader at Minnechaug Regional High School has been named as a 2015 Brine National High School All-America and has been selected to represent the New England Region at the 2015 Brine National Lacrosse Classic to be held at the River City Sportsplex in Virginia, June 29 to July 2.

The Brine National Lacrosse Classic brings the top high school lacrosse players in the nation to one venue, where regional teams will compete for a national recognition in front of NCAA lacrosse coaches.

WSU swim team earns Scholar All-America honors

WESTFIELD – Westfield State University's swimming and diving team has been selected as a College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team

The CSCAA honors programs that maintain a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.  The Owls posted a collective 3.34 grade point average during the spring 2015 semester.

According to the CSCAA’s press release announcing the teams, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has designated a record 406 collegiate swimming and diving programs as Scholar All-America Teams.  The recognition comes as a result of the programs' classroom performance in the past semester.   It is the first time in the program's more than 30-year history that at least 600 teams, representing 406 institutions received the designation.  

Overall, 153 women’s NCAA Division III swimming and diving programs were recognized. The Owls were tied for the 84th highest GPA, but fifth among the public higher education institutions on the list.

The Owls posted a 4-3 record in dual meets, posting a 22nd consecutive season with a winning record.
