Local Roundup: Crutchfield selected to MASCAC All-Conference team

FITCHBURG – East Longmeadow’s Lia Crutchfield  was one of four members of the Fitchburg State University women’s lacrosse team named to the 2015 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women’s Lacrosse All-Conference team.

Crutchfield was an All-Conference award winner after posting a solid rookie year. She anchored the Falcons’ defense in limiting opponents to just over 8.8 goals per contest, while picking up her first collegiate score in an 18-2 win over Elms College on March 26.

Curran hits the ground running

SARASOTA, FL – Agawam’s Seamus Curran started off the month of July hot, carrying a five-game hitting streak for the Gulf Coast Leage Orioles as of press time on July 7.  He also recorded an RBI in each of his three contests from July 3 to 5.

In his first eight games since signing his first professional contract after being drafted by the Orioles in the eighth round, Curran batted .308 with a .842 on base plus slugging percentage while knocking in five runs. He also recorded a double and a triple.

Mazeika starts pro career red hot

KINGSPORT, TN – Wilbraham’s Patrick Mazeika started off his professional career red-hot.

In his first 13 games with the Kingsport Mets after being drafted in the eighth round by the New York Mets in this year’s draft, Mazieka led the team in on base plus slugging percentage at 1.002 ranked second on the team with a .326 batting average.

The catcher out of Stetson University was also second on the team with 10 RBI and had clubbed a pair of home runs as of press time on July 7.

After going 0-for-4 in his professional debut, Mazeika went on a nine-game hitting streak from June 24 to July 3.

Crinella records first pro hit

SARASOTA, FL – East Longmeadow’s Frank Crinella recorded his first professional base hit with the Gulf Coast League Orioles during his debut with the organization on June 23.

As of press time on July 7, the 39th round pick of the Orioles in this year’s Major League Baseball Draft had appeared in seven games, recording five hits in 24 at bats. He also stole two bases without getting caught.

A third baseman while playing at Merrimack College, Crinella has primarily played second base with the Orioles.

Pride garners Scholar All-America honors

NORFOLK, VA –  Wilbraham’s Christiana Greco and Springfield’s Michael Normoyle earned CSCAA Scholar All-America honors received College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) All-America honors, Springfield College announced on July 1.

East Longmeadow’s Callie Phillips and Melanie Avdoulos garnered CSCAA Honorable Mention Scholar All-America recognition.

To be selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, swimmers and divers must have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Honorable Mention selections have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a “B” time standard or competed at their respective qualifying meets.

Overall, the Pride women and men were honored as CSCAA Scholar All-America teams.

The Springfield women registered a team cumulative grade-point average of 3.70, ranking the best in New England, No. 2 in Division III and No. 3 across all NCAA Divisions. The men had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.26.

To be selected as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, programs must have achieved a grade point average of 3.00 or higher over the spring semester.
