Local Roundup: Jones leads SMCC to YSCC title game, receives conference honors

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Freshman center Amira Jones of Chicopee earned Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) Second Team All-Conference honors for the Southern Maine Community College women’s basketball team.

Jones neared a double-double average, scoring 12.9 points and grabbing 9.8 rebounds per game. She also shot a team best 72.4 percent, 89 of 123, from the free throw line.

The Lady Seawolves made it to the YSCC championship game, but fell 72-67 to St. Joseph’s (VT), in spite of a tremendous 21 point, 15 rebound performance by Jones. She was named Outstanding Offensive Player of the tournament.

Owls named All-MASCAC

WESTFIELD – Andre King, a senior on the Westfield State University men’s basketball team from Springfield, was named to the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference First Team.

A transfer from Division II St. Anselm College, he stepped right into the Owls lineup and averaged 15.6 points per game, shooting a deadly 42 percent from three-point range, and leads the team with 3.2 assists per game. He leads the league in 3-point field goal percentage, ranks second in assists and third in scoring.

Robby Jones of Chicopee was named to the Second Team after averaging 11.3 points per game and leads the Owls with 51 steals. He had an explosive finish to the season, scoring 19, 20 and 22 points in the three of the Owls last five games, and was at his best in conference play where he scored nearly 14 points per game.

Ritter’s helpers not enough to lift Leopards

AUBURNDALE – Collin Ritter of Feeding Hills had 20 assists, but the 13th-ranked Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team was handed its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference loss of the season as the Leopards were upset by Lasell, 3-0 on Feb. 26.

Grieshaber competes at MAC Championships

OWINGS MILLS, MD – Megan Grieshaber of  East Longmeadow and the Stevenson University men’s and women’s swim teams recently wrapped up their first season at the MAC Championship. Grieshaber was part of the 400 yard freestyle relay that placed 10th and the 400 yard medley and 200 yard freestyle relays that each placed 11th.

Strohman finishes fifth at New Englands

BRISTOL, R.I. – Jacob Strohman of East Longmeadow both posted a fifth-place finish at the NCAA New England Regionals hosted at Roger Williams University. Wrestling at 141, Strohman strung together four consecutive wins after falling early in the tournament, but fell to Jake Savoca of Williams College by tech fall in 3:30 to fall to the fifth-place match. There, Strohman won by decision over Matthew Pelton of Wesleyan, 10-6.

Dusel makes 16 saves in season debut

NORTON – University of New England junior goalkeeper John Dusel of Wilbraham turned away a game-high 16 shots as the Nor’easters topped Wheaton College 12-11 in the season opener on Feb. 28.
