Locals head to soccer nationals

The Wild Wheels Wheelchair Soccer Teams went to the 24th National Disabled Alliance Indoor Wheelchair Soccer Nationals. The teams went Nov. 9 to 13.

The three-day competition took place in Long Island, New York. Western Mass had two adult teams competing at this years' national competition. This event will bring together hundreds of disabled athletes from across the nation.

The Wild Wheels and Wicked Wheels are organized through Child & Family Service of Pioneer Valley's Disability Resource Program. The program's director, Nancy Bazanchuk, is also the head coach. "The team has been playing together for eight years now," Bazanchuk said. "It started playing as a recreational activity, but we soon became a competitive team."

Wheelchair soccer is a fast-paced competitive game that includes people of all skill levels. It is played on an indoor basketball court and the ball is moved by passing with hands or kicking, depending on the player's ability. The Wild Wheels practice at Springfield College's Dana Gymnasium and we welcome new players to join in the game.
