Locals make impact at Games

The 2007 Bay State Winter Games were held Feb. 2-4 at the Lansing Chapman Rink on the campus of Williams College in Williamstown. The event was sponsored by the Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation-Bay State Games and medalists qualify to compete at the national State Games of America to be held this summer in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Catherine Kielb represented the town of Hampden and won a bronze medal. She is a member of the Little Sun Valley Skating Club and represents the club in U.S. Figure Skating competitions.

The following skaters represent the Little Sun Valley Skating Club in U.S. Figure Skating competitions and the Bay State Blades-Forest Park in Ice Skating Institute competitions. All have qualified for the State Games of America.

Ashley Assad, Wilbraham gold medal; Tylar Anne Suckau, West Springfield silver medal; LeAnne Lessard, Chicopee silver medal; Heather Duquette, Springfield gold medal; Britani Morgan, Springfield bronze medal; Marissa Tetreault, Springfield bronze medal; Shelby Morrissette, Springfield two bronze medals; Elizabeth Duffy, Springfield gold medal.

Deidre Tocci, South Hadley, silver medal and the recipient of a New Balance/MASF sports initiative Good Sportsmanship Award for her positive attitude and support of fellow competitors.

Georgina Oliveira of Ludlow did not compete due to injury but was nominated for (by a fellow skater she was due to compete against) and received a New Balance/MASF sports initiative Good Sportsmanship Award for her kindness and support during the competition.

Congratulations go out to all competitors who represented their cities and towns in this competition. Past Bay State Games competitors include Olympic figure skating medalists Nancy Kerrigan and Paul Wylie, as well as Jim Craig and David Jensen-Olympic medalists in hockey.
