Locals named to National Academic Squad

CHICOPEE – Kayla Narey of South Hadley, Allison Masi of West Springfield and Marie Lafortune of Southwick were among 14 Elms College field hockey players who were named to the 2013 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Squad as recently announced by the organization.

The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2013-14 academic year.

Sam Power of Southwick was one of 13 members of the Westfield State University squad to make the team.

Bard nets NE-10 Rookie of the Week honors

SOUTH EASTON – American International College freshman attackman Justin Bard of Westfield was named this week Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week announced by the league office Monday afternoon.Bard scored three goals at second ranked Adelphi and found the back of the net twice in a tightly contested game at No. 8 Merrimack.

After receiving the award, Bard had a first quarter hat trick and added two assists as the Yellow Jackets earned their first Northeast-10 win of the year over Saint Rose 8-6 on March 25.

Williams named to MASCAC honor roll

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Dayvon Williams of Springfield was placed on the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s track and field honor roll after he placed first in the triple jump (41-4 1/2) as the Westfield State University men’s track and field team opened its outdoor season at the Wesleyan University Invitational on March 22. Williams also placed third in the 110 hurdles.
