McEwen named director of athletics at Elms

CHICOPEE – The Elms College athletics department recently announced the hiring of Ellen McEwen as the new director of athletics.

McEwen, who began her appointment on Aug. 1, brings more than 30 years of collegiate athletics administration, teaching and coaching experience to her position at Elms and has completed stints at all three NCAA division levels as well as the National Junior College Athletic Association.

“I was very interested in joining the Elms College community because I wanted to be in division III, I was interested in being at a liberal arts institution and I have always loved the New England area,“ McEwen stated. “What sold me on Elms was the sense of family that exists within the athletics department and I wanted to be a part of that.”

McEwen most recently spent the last year as the director of athletics at National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas, where she managed the day-to-day operations of the Rams’ athletics department.

Prior Huston-Tillotson, her experience includes associate athletic director and head tennis coach at Trinity University in Washington, D.C., and the director of athletics and lecturer at the University of Wisconsin – Fond Du Lac.

McEwen was the acting senior woman administrator, a physical education instructor and head volleyball and softball coach at State University of New York – Potsdam. In addition, she was the director of athletics at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and the director of women’s athletics and intramurals at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey.

McEwen received her bachelor’s degree in education from Ashland University in Ohio and her master’s of arts degree from Ohio State University. She is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
