Mickiewicz, Golden Bears earn first Commonwealth Coast Conference win

SPRINGFIELD – East Longmeadow’s Ryan Mickiewicz chipped in 11 points and a game-best six assists as the Western New England University men’s basketball team picked up its first Commonwealth Coast Conference victory on Jan. 11, edging visiting Eastern Nazarene College 79-76.

Ferrentino just misses double-double in loss

SPRINGFIELD – Krista Ferrentino narrowly missed a double-double, with 16 points and nine rebounds, both tops for the American International College women’s basketball team, but the Yellow Jackets dropped a 57-54 contest to Franklin Pierce on Jan. 8.

Ferrentino also finished in double figures with 10 points as the Yellow Jackets topped Southern New Hampshire 73-59 on Jan. 11.

Strohman records decision at NWCA National Duals

DES MOINES, Iowa – Jacob Strohman of East Longmeadow, Mass., put Springfield ahead for good with an 8-6 victory at the 141-pound weight class as the Springfield College wrestling team defeated Elmhurst 25-15 at the NWCA National Duals on Jan. 11.

The Pride also wrestled and ultimately fell to Coe (34-6) and Mount Union (21-18).

Springfield swimming swept

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Christiana Greco of Wilbraham, Mass., won the 50-yard butterfly (26.95) and placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.50), but the Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team narrowly fell to host Middlebury 150-148 on Jan. 11.

Delaney Dyjak of Ludlow, Mass., and Callie Phillips of East Longmeadow, Mass., were part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won with a time of 3:40.19.

Michael Normoyle of Springfield, Mass., also swam well for the Pride men’s team, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (59.51) and placing second in the 50-yard breaststroke (27.65) and third in the 100-yard individual medley (56.29). The men fell 181.5-116.5.

Skiffington continues to lead Bay Path hoops

HOLYOKE – Kayla Skiffington of East Longmeadow had a stellar performance finishing with a game high 16 rebounds and 20 points, but the Bay Path College women’s basketball team lost a close one 64-58 on Jan. 11.

Skiffington also led all players with a game-high 17 points, but Bay Path College fell to Regis College 59-36 on Jan. 7.

Grippo wins two in Elms College swimming victory

CHICOPEE – Longmeadow’s James Grippo glided to first in the 800-meter freestyle (10:07.80) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:11.06) as the Elms College men’s swimming and diving team had five different swimmers secure first place finishes to help stake a 146-82 victory over Bridgewater State University on Jan. 8.

He was also part of the 200-meter medley relay that won in a time of 2:03.17.

Grippo also contributed a top time in the 800-meter freestyle (10:02.37) and finished second in the 100-meter backstroke (1:08.25) as the Blazers topped Mount Saint Mary College 113-72 on Jan. 11.

Andrew Pioggia of East Longmeadow chipped in a third place mark in the 50-meter butterfly (33.94).

WNE edges Framingham State

SPRINGFIELD – Senior defenseman Cam Napolitan of East Longmeadow recorded an assist in the Western New England University men’s hockey team’s 5-4 victory over Framingham State on Jan. 7.
