The Mount Holyoke College women's tennis team earned a dramatic 6-3 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Springfield College this afternoon at Appleton Courts. The Lyons trailed 3-0 after doubles play but rebounded to sweep the singles matches en route to their first league win of the 2007 campaign. Springfield (2-5, 1-4 NEWMAC) jumped out to a 3-0 edge following a trio of narrow victories on the doubles side. Seniors Shannon Desroches (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) and Jessica Sousa (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth Regional) highlighted things with a 9-8 (7-4) triumph over sophomores Beatrix Hartmann (Redding, Conn./Mount St. Mary) and Sarah London (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Academic Magnet) at the second slot. The Pride's first and third pairings each tallied 8-6 wins. Mount Holyoke sliced the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of straight sets victories on the singles side. Senior Meaghan Sloane (Concord, Mass./Lawrence Academy) downed first year Amy Shaw (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) 6-2, 6-3 in the number two matchup, and sophomore Elizabeth Tighe (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over sophomore Rachel Kushma (London, England/ACS Hillingdton International School) at the number three spot. After dropping their first sets, each of the Lyons four remaining singles players battled back to earn three-set victories. Included in the comeback was an amazing 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory by first year Natalie Hsiang (Pittsford, N.Y./Allendale Columbia) over junior Melissa Weinstein (Allentown, Pa./Perkiomen School) at the number one slot. Hsiang trailed 4-1 in the final set but came back to win each of the last five games. London, Hartmann and sophomore Eleni Scordilis (Florence, Mass./Northampton) finished things off with victories at the numbers four, five and six spots, respectively. |
