Mutiny’s scoring struggles now a distant memory

Date: 7/2/2014

EAST LONGMEADOW – The New England Mutiny (3-2-2 WPSL New England) scored early and often against the New Hampshire Phantoms (2-5-0 WPSL New England) at East Longmeadow High School, cruising to a 7-0 win over their division adversary on June 29. It was just the result the Mutiny needed as they now head into a vital three-game stretch to end the regular season.

Leading scorer Kate Howarth notched her fifth goal of the season in the 11th minute, as she intercepted a failed clearance from Phantoms goalkeeper Danielle Tidd and deposited the ball into a open net. It would eventually prove to be the game-winning tally, although the gaffe wasn’t indicative of Tidd’s overall performance in goal as she was besieged all night, making 13 saves off 24 Mutiny shots on goal.

In the 20th minute, Rachel Ugolik broke the left flank and dribbled into the New Hampshire penalty area. Her cross found Tori Sousa who beat Tidd to the ball and scored her second goal of the season for the 2-0 lead. Meghan Cunningham came off the bench for the Mutiny midway through the first half and immediately began to terrorize the Phantoms defense.

In the 33rd minute, she combined with Julie Hubbard to put the Mutiny up 3-0. Four minutes later, Jenna Fisher scored her first goal of 2014, capitalizing off a goal-mouth scramble for an unassisted tally. Cunningham would assist on Andrea Plucenik’s goal in the 40th minute, while Fisher would add her second of the game in first half injury time for the 6-0 halftime lead.

The second half didn’t start any better than the first for the visiting side, as the Mutiny’s Roxy Lee-Stewart headed in the final goal of the night in the 50th minute. It was another soft one to concede for Tidd, but unfortunately, she was essentially left to fend for herself on this night. New England would run out the rest of the match with class and style for the big 7-0 victory.

The Mutiny now hit the road for two big matches versus the professional Boston Breakers Reserves and their Academy team. New England will need wins in both matches to keep themselves in contention for the playoffs. Than, the regular season home finale will be “AAA Night” on July 12 as they host Aztec F.C. at East Longmeadow High School. Fans can enter to win a $500 AAA travel voucher that will be given away at halftime.
