Mutiny boosts team depth

Date: 6/5/2015

SPRINGFIELD – The New England Mutiny take on the Jersey Blues June 6 at 7 p.m. at Northampton High School. In advance of the match, the Mutiny has strengthened its roster with several new additions.

Midfielder Julia Weithofer and defender Chelsea Botta will don the Mutiny colors this summer. Both players are natives of East Longmeadow and both played high school soccer for the East Longmeadow Spartans. Botta and Weithofer join Jenny Maurer and Erin Duffy as the four players signed from East Longmeadow in the club’s 16-year history.

Weithofer has played in all 39 games in her career under coach Ed Matz at the University of Massachusetts. She was a three-year letter winner at East Longmeadow for coach Jenny Maurer, the Mutiny’s all-time leader in games played. Weithofer helped the Spartans reach the state finals and win a western Mass title in 2011. This will be her second season with New England.

Veteran defender Chelsea Botta returns to action for the Mutiny. She played for the Mutiny from 2009 to 2011. Botta started and played every game in her four-year career at Marist College with 83 starts in 83 games. For East Longmeadow, Botta was named All-State and First Team All-Western Mass as well as serving as the team’s captain in 2008.

Defender Madison Smith of the University of Massachusetts (UMass) women’s soccer team will join Minutewomen teammates Weithofer, Georgia Gibson and Meghan Burke. Smith helped the Minutewomen record six shutouts last fall. Smith, a junior from Bristow, VA, was second on the team with 1683 minutes played for UMass.

Returning to the Mutiny for a third season will be Central Connecticut State midfielder Tori Sousa. Sousa was named Northeast Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Year and 2nd-team All-New England. The Nashua, N.H., native led the team in goals (7), assists (6) and points (20). Sousa also notched 2 game-winning goals and led the Blue Devils to an NCAA tournament berth. Also adding strength to the Mutiny midfield will be Hartford’s Sidney Spremullo, who started every match for coach John Natale this fall.
