Shaw, Leonard to participate in prestigious hockey tourney

Date: 4/30/2015

GREATER SPRINGFIELD – Ryan Shaw of Springfield and Ryan Leonard of Amherst have been selected to participate play in the most prestigious youth hockey tournament in the world called “The Brick.”

The young men grew up playing hockey against each other for their respective towns, Leonard played for Amherst Youth Hockey and Shaw with Holy Name, and now they will be together on the ice.  For the past three years, Leonard has been with the Springfield Rifles and Shaw has been playing for the New England Junior Falcons.

Being a part of “The Brick” is a once in a lifetime event, as the tournament is only offered for 10-year-olds. This is a tremendous honor to participate and represent Boston. Only 240 of the top 10-year-old hockey players are chosen to play in “The Brick”.

Shaw and Leonard and their families will travel to Edmonton, Alberta in late June as part of the Boston Junior Bruins hockey team.  The team will be one of only 14 competing in the 26th Brick Super Novice Invitational Tournament. A number of current NHL players have participated in this tournament; PK Subban, Johnathan Toews, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Dany Heatly, Blake Wheeler, Steven Stamkos and Dougie Hamilton.

These hockey superstars are just regular 10-year old boys when not on the ice.

Shaw attends St. Michaels Academy, loves enjoying his favorite food which is steak and watching “Behind the B” and the NHL network. His all-time favorite hockey team is the Anaheim Ducks. The whole community is proud of Shaw, but in particular his parents Dalena and Gene Shaw and his brother Cody Shaw are ecstatic for his opportunity.

Leonard, the younger brother of Cathedral High School standout John Leonard, shares his excitement with his brother and two sisters Alyssa and Brianna; as well as his parents Cindy and John Leonard.  He attends Fort River Elementary School and is a huge Boston Bruins fan. When he’s not on the ice he enjoys watching hockey, Disney and Nickelodeon and munching on chicken wings.
